In conjunction with our parthers Sifam Tinsley, we bring you a complete guide to electrical measurments, including power correction and digital energy meters avalable today.
What is voltage?
Voltage is the pressure from an electrical circuit's power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling them to do work such as illuminating a light.
Domestic mains voltage = 230V
What is current?
Current is the rate at which electrons flow past a point in a complete electrical circuit. At its most basic, current = flow.
How power (watts) is calculated
AC single phase amps to watts calculation formula
The real power P in watts (W) is equal to the power factor PF x the phase current I in amps (A), x RMS voltage V in volts (V)
P(W) = PF × I(A) × V(V) ( 2’300 watts = PF (1) x I (10A) x V (230V)
So watts are equal to power factor times amps times volts:
watt = PF × amp × volt
The importance of power factor
A power factor of one or “unity power factor” is the goal of any electric utility company, since is the power factor is less than one you have to supply more current (hence more electric being used and charged for)
Example
P(W) = PF × I(A) × V(V) ( 2’300 watts = PF (1) x I (10A) x V (230V)
P(W) = PF × I(A) × V(V) ( 2’300 watts = PF (0.6) x I (16.67A) x V (230V)
Power factor improvement:
The low power factor is mainly due to the inductive loads. In order to overcome this situation, we must connect a capacitor in parallel with the loads which can somehow stabilize the power factor. Power factor improvement can be achieved by using the following types of equipment
How energy is charged
Energy in kilowatt hours = Power in watts x time in hours
Example P(2’300 Watts = 2.3kWatts) x t (10 hours)
kWh = 23 kilowatt hours
Prior to October 2006, gas and electricity meters were placed on the market in accordance with the requirements of the Gas Act 1986 and the Electricity Act 1989. In October 2006, the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC was implemented to harmonise the requirements of 10 different measuring instrument types, including gas and active electrical energy meters.
In April 2016 the original MID was replaced by the ‘recast’ MID (2014/32/EU) implemented by The Measuring Instruments Regulations SI 2016/1153.
MID approved instruments will have passed specific conformity assessment procedures and have MID markings which allow the instruments to be used in any EU member state. The aim of the directive is to create a single market in measuring instruments for the benefit of manufacturers and, ultimately, consumers across Europe.
